In the early 20th Century, Goulds was a thriving agricultural community and railroad stop home to prominent Black homesteaders, many of whom passed their land on to children and grandchildren. Over the next several decades, Goulds suffered from inequitable public policy, systemic racism, hurricane damage and other factors that eroded its economic strength.
Today, Goulds is at an inflection point. Its population is growing as rising housing prices drive people farther south in Miami-Dade County. Goulds’ legacy as a historically Black agricultural community is also challenged by demographic shifts and new commercial and residential development. With rising costs and climate threats, long-time lower-income residents are most vulnerable to displacement.
Miami-Dade County’s Choice Neighborhoods (CNI) award is a powerful tool to ensure long-time residents remain an essential part of Goulds’ future and have access to expanding economic opportunities and resources.
